Extending the USB Cable for a GPIB-USB-AHardware: GPIB>>External Controllers/Convertors>>GPIB-USB-A
Problem: I have a GPIB-USB-A cable and I want to connect to instruments too far from the computer for the cable to reach. Can I extend my cable? Solution: Yes. Use third-party products called Active USB Extenders. More than just a length of cable, these extenders have an integrated circuit that buffers the USB signals to maintain signal integrity. The extender lengths vary, but some models reach 16 feet long. Most manufacturers claim you can cascade up to five extenders. The GPIB-USB-A was successfully tested with four cascaded 16-foot extender cables manufactured by ATEN, with no degradation in performance at a total distance of about 64 feet. Other manufacturers (such as B&B Electronics) offer similar products, but they have not been tested with the GPIB-USB-A.
