Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) Problems When Not Logged in as an Administrator under Windows 2000

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>Measure
Primary Software Version: 2.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: 2.0
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) operates fine when I log into my computer as an Administrator. However, when I log in as a member of the Users Group, MAX gives me an error and there is nothing shown in any of the folders under My System. My COM ports are not even visible under Devices and Interfaces.

Solution:
The group that the user is a member of does not have proper access rights to the MAX Configuration File. For MAX 2.2 and before, the configuration file is config.mxs file in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\MAX. For MAX 3.0 to MAX 4.1, the configuration file is config3.mxs and can be found in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\MAX\data. For MAX 4.2 and higher, the configuration file, config3.mxs, can be found in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\National Instruments\MAX\Data for Windows XP/2000 and at: C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\MAX\Data for Windows Vista. There are two solutions to this problem:

Solution 1:
Make sure you are logged in as the Administrator. Go to Start » Settings » Control Panel » Administrative Tools » Computer Management and select the Users folder under Local Users and Groups. Right-click on the appropriate user in the list in the window on the right and select Properties. Select the Member Of tab and left-click on the Add button. Add Power Users to the list and click OK. This will solve the problem, but it will also give that user all the privileges of the Power Users group.

Solution 2:
Make sure you are logged in as the Administrator. Go to the config.mxs or config3.mxs file described in the first paragraph. Right-click on that file and select Properties. Select the Security tab to view the permissions for the selected group. Select the appropriate user group and place a check mark in the boxes to Allow Modify and Write privileges for the user group and click OK. Now log out and log back in as a member of the user group. You will now be able to see all of the devices in MAX.
