Configuring the NI MES-3980 IP Address and Accessing the Web Console

Hardware: Compact FieldPoint, CompactRIO, Instrument Connectivity Other>>Ethernet

Problem:
I need to configure the NI MES-3980 for a static or dynamic IP address and then access the web browser to configure settings. How can I get this accomplished?

Solution:
TheNI MES-3980 ships with a default IP address noted in the documentation and on the product label. The default IP address is http://192.168.127.253. If you are unable to detect the switch through the web server or Ether Device Configurator, check your IP address settings to ensure you are on the same subnet as the switch.

To Configure a Static IP Address
A static IP address provides a simple and easy way to manage communication on a private network.
  1. Ensure your PC is on the same subnet as IP address 192.168.127.253. A simple way to do this is go to your Network Settings and change to a static IP address of 192.168.127.254 with a subnet or 255.255.255
  2. Type http://192.168.127.253 into a web browser.
  3. Select Admin for Account and leave the Password field blank. After selecting Login change the password as needed.
  4. From here modify the Switch IP address and connected PC IP address as needed.
Using the default IP address and a pre-configured PC to access the web browser is recommended for most static configurations of the NI MES-3980. Refer to the NI MES-3980 User’s Manual for other configuration options, linked below.

Configuring a Dynamic IP Address
The simplest way to configure a dynamic IP address using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is to use the software utility attached in this KB.

To configure a Dynamic IP Address:
  1. Install the Ether Device Configurator based on the OS you are using.
  2. Search for managed switches on your subnet, select List Server » Broadcast Search
  3. Select Configuration » Web Console to launch a web browser and connect to the Switch
  4. Optional: Change the IP Address to DHCP or Static from Web Console using Configuration » Modify IP Address
  5. After DHCP is select in either location, power cycle the switch
  6. Perform another Broadcast search, select List Server » Broadcast Search
  7. Locate NI MES-3980 and then open a new web browser, select Configuration » Web Console
