Creating Custom Cables for NI Motion Controllers (733x, 734x, 735x) Hardware: Motion Control>>Controllers>>PCI-7332
Problem: I do not see a cable suitable for my needs, so I would like to create my own custom cable. What are the needed connectors and who makes them? Solution: The connector on National Instruments' motion cables is a 0.8 mm VHDCI (Very High Density Cable Interconnect). If you refer to the User Manual for the motion controller (733x, 734x, 735x), the recommended connector is made by a company called Tyco Electronics and is part number 787801-1. This is a kit that includes jackscrews. This kit is easier to use for non-professionals and does not require any special tools. The part number of the actual connector made by Tyco Electronics is 787775-1. However, using the jackscrews in the kit that Tyco Electronics supplies requires the use of a backshell kit (788362-1) or an alternate backshell/overmold. The backshell kit also helps keep the IDC connections in place. Referring to Data Acquisition (DAQ) literature, many DAQ boards use the same 0.8 mm VHDCI connection as the motion boards. The recommended connector for DAQ cables is made by a company called Molex and is part number 71425-3001. This connector is more difficult to assemble. In this case, the connector should be used with a Molex backshell (73796 Series). NI uses a custom backshell for its cable assemblies. Both connector types will work with our motion controllers. NI recommends the Tyco Electronics connector kit (787801-01) and backshell kit (788362-01) for ease of assembly. It is also important to note that the backshell kit that NI uses is slightly offset to avoid interference with neighboring ports. Furthermore, the 7358 motion controller has a dual-stack VHDCI connection interface. This can be difficult to implement; however, it is technically feasible.
