DIAdem Starting Slowly

Primary Software: DIAdem
Primary Software Version: 10.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
DIAdem is taking a long time to start but it does eventually load up fine. What's going on and how can I fix this?

Solution: Here are three possible reasons for a slow DIAdem start:

1) First scenario:
In DIAdem versions prior to 9.1, customers would occasionally configure a static data matrix (instead of a dynamic one), say for 1000 channels each with 1 million values per channel.  When you configure DIAdem to allocate a static data matrix, it will do so as the last step in the launch cycle.  In the above example, the data matrix consists of 8 GBytes, and this will take quite a long time.

2) Second scenario:
In all DIAdem versions, customers will occasionally configure DIAdem to load a particular data file as the last step in the launch cycle. If this particular data file is very large and takes quite a while to load, then the launch cycle (which includes this file loading) will also take quite a long time.

3) Third scenario:
In DIAdem versions 10.0 and after, customers will occasionally configure one or more DataFinder Search Areas (defined in NAVIGATOR) to point to network drives.  If the customer has also configured their DIAdem to automatically open the NAVIGATOR tree view to a very deep point in that Search Area's tree structure, it can take DIAdem a long time to pull that information back through the network and populate the NAVIGATOR tree view.  The same is technically true for a local Search Area, but typically this problem is only bothersome with a Search Area pointing to a network drive in a company with a very slow network.

How can you solve those problems?
First bite the bullet and wait for DIAdem to finally finish launching, then change the following settings in DIAdem, depending on the problem type listed above:

1) First scenario:
Reconfigure the data matrix by selecting the menu "Settings>>Options>>General>>Data Area", then choosing "Dynamic data management"

2) Second scenario:
Reconfigure the default data file by selecting the NAVIGATOR menu "Settings>>Options>>NAVIGATOR", then deleting the default file

3) Third scenario:
Collapse the NAVIGATOR tree view prior to closing DIAdem each time.

In rare cases and only for scenarios 1) and 2) does it ever make sense to delete the configuration files. If you do this, all custom settings will be lost and replaced by the DIAdem default settings:
  • Navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows account that DIAdem is installed under>\Local Settings\Application Data\National Instruments\DIAdem\<version> directory.
  • Delete the files: Config.INI, Desktop.DDD, Desktop.PAR, and Desktop.SIC.
  • Restart DIAdem. These files will be automatically generated.
Note: There are also Desktop.ddd and Desktop.par files located in the DIAdem program folder. These files are indispensable because they contain the DIAdem default settings. Never delete these files from the DIAdem program folder.
