Why Can I Not Access COM Port 10 and Higher After Upgrading From LabVIEW 6.1? Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Full Development SystemPrimary Software Version: 7.0 Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA Hardware: Serial>>RS-232, Serial
Problem: After upgrading to LabVIEW 7.0 from LabVIEW 6.1, my serial communication on COM Port 10 and higher no longer works, even though the rest of my ports are communicating just fine. Solution: If you were using the serial compatibility VIs (instead of VISA) in LabVIEW 6.1, then the underlying behavior for these VIs changed significantly in LabVIEW 7.0. Those VIs no longer access the native windows serial driver, and have been retrofitted to use VISA instead. In LabVIEW 6.1 and earlier the serial compatibility VIs would treat all ports as serial ports by default, but in LabVIEW 7.0 the default behavior for VISA is to treat ports 1 - 9 as COM(serial) ports and to treat ports 10 and higher as LPT(parallel) ports. In order to change this default behavior so that you can use serial ports higher than 9, the visaconf.ini file must be altered. Click on the link below for specific instructions on altering the visaconf.ini file.
