Problem: My Serial instrument isn't giving me back data in Excel when I use a Measure Serial task. How can I troubleshoot this problem? Solution: First, disconnect your instrument from your serial cable. Next, use a paper clip to connect pins 2 and 3 of your serial cable (pins 2 and 3 are the third and fourth pins of the top row if you've got your 5-pin row on top and your 4-pin row on bottom). By connecting pins 2 and 3, you are performing a "loopback" test, where whatever data you send to the serial port is immediately returned to you. Next, use the "Test" button in your "Instrument" configuration screen in Measure to send a simple command to your serial port. For instance, if you send "Hello" as your string, you might receive back something like this: Hello\013\010 By doing this you can now see what the end-of-line (EOL) and end-of-information (EOI) characters are. For this example, the serial port returns a "\013" string to signal the end of a line and a "\010" string to signal the end of a transmission. This test shows that your serial port is functioning correctly, and it also reveals to you the EOL and EOI characters that your serial port uses. If you do not receive any data back from the loopback test, then the problem lies in the configuration of your serial port. Please consult the help in Windows to troubleshoot serial port problems.
