How Do I Go From Clients Managed by NI VLM to Single-Seat Activate Clients?

Problem: I have chosen not to renew my Volume License Agreement, and I would like to use serial numbers to activate client software on each machine.  What steps should I take to get the clients to not use the NI VLM server and to be activated with serial numbers.

Solution: There are 3 steps needed to take the client machines from using the NI VLM server to being activated locally.
  1. Uninstall NI VLM - You first will need to uninstall the NI VLM server from the server machine.  This can be done by going through Control Panel>>Add/Remove Programs>>National Instruments Software>>NI Volume License Manager.  You can choose to uninstall the product, and it will remove all of the appropriate parts from the server machine.
  2. Remove Server Information from the Client Machine - You will need to remove the server information from each client machine.  While not a mandatory step, server information left on the client machine will greatly slow the launching of NI products.  Server information can exist in a few different places.  In most cases the server information can be found in the NI License Manager client-side utility.  To remove this information go to Start Menu>>Programs>>National Instruments>>NI License Manager.  Selection Options>>Preferences, and then uncheck the Use Network License Servers checkbox.  License server information may also exist in the NILM_LICENSE_FILE and LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variables.  You can remove the information from those variables by going to Control Panel>>System>>Advanced Tab>>Environment Variables.
  3. Activate Local Licenses Using Serial Numbers - You can activate local licenses through NI License Manager.  Once NI License Manager is open, right-click on the family or specific product you would like to activate, and then choose Activate....  The NI Activation Wizard will then take you through the rest of the steps.  Return to NI License Manager and repeat the process for any other local licenses you would like to activate for this client machine.
