Issue Details

  • When I connect my USB DAQ device or USB cDAQ chassis into a USB 3.0 port, the device or the modules do not show up correctly in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI-MAX).
  • In Device Manager, I see:
    • USB Flash Firmware Updater under Data Acquisition Devices
    • or This device cannot start (Code 10).
How can I fix this issue?

Solution

First, check if the USB device is validated to work with USB 3.0. This information can be found in the device's specification sheet under the Bus Interface section, or on the NI shop page for that device.

  • If it specifies USB 2.0 as the bus interface then NI cannot guarantee that the device will work with a USB 3.0 port.

If the device is intended to work with a USB 3.0 port then follow the rest of this article for further troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check your USB cable connection to see if it is faulty.
  2. Check that you are connecting the DAQ device directly to the computer's USB ports. The use of external USB hubs (even when externally powered) can make this error happen.
  3. It is recommended that you update your USB Host Controller's driver.
    1. Open Device Manager by going to Start»Control Panel»System and Security»System and click Device Manager.
    2. Find the heading titled Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it.
    3. Look for the USB 3.0 Controller that your device is plugged into, right click it, and select Properties.
    4. Note the name of the Manufacturer under the General tab:

  1. Once you know the manufacturer of the USB 3.0 Host Controller, download the latest driver for your host controller from the manufacturer's website.

    Additional Information

    • This is a known issue with USB cDAQ chassis and modules, USB X Series devices, and myDAQ. NI has seen this issue with Renesas, Fresco Logic and ASMedia USB controllers, but other controllers may also be affected.
    • Upgrading your computer to Windows 8 or Windows 10 and using the built-in driver has also been shown to fix this issue in most situations.
    • NI has observed that communication issues, including dropped packets, with ASMedia controllers based on the ASM1042 are still unresolved using the latest firmware on both Windows 7 and 8.
    • If installing Windows 8 or upgrading your USB Host Controller's driver are not available options, it is recommended to use a USB 2.0 port to connect to your device.
