Module Behavior When Validating Virtual Devices in Switch Executive

Primary Software: Switch Executive
Primary Software Version: 2.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: Why does my switch module not click when I validate my virtual device?

Solution: When you are validating your device it is sometimes good to simulate your hardware. If you are just checking whether your routes are allowed, it is often best to use simulation mode until you are close to complete. This avoids unecessary wear on the relays.

It is possible to leave the simulation settings in place when you are attempting to validate your hardware. Checking three things will allow you to make sure you are validating the routes using our actual hardware.

Check 1
The first thing to check is that you do not have Simulation Mode activated. The box where this is selected is part of the validation dialog.

Check 2
If you are not using simulation mode it is still possible that you could be using a DAQmx simulated device. Checking this in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) is straighforward. Go to the Devices and Interfaces tree and then the NI-DAQmx Devices tree. Be sure the device you have selected to validate with is not a simulated device. The image below shows a simulated device in MAX.

Check 3

After making sure that the device is real, and you do not have simulation mode selected the main thing left to check is that you do not have the IVI driver session configured to simulate the module. You can check this in the IVI Drivers tree in MAX under Driver Sessions. Make sure the "Simulate With" input has "do not simulate" selected from the pull down menu.

The last thing to consider is the type of relay you have. If you have a solid-state or FET relay module you should not hear your relays switching, due to their physical characteristics. Armature and reed electromechanical relays should make sound, though reed relays are quieter. To find the kind of relays you are using please look at the links below.  You can check on the product pages, or look at NI Switches Help » Devices.  The NI Switches help has a relay replacement section for each module.  There you can find relay type, model and manufacturer.
