Problem:
What is the small black component that shipped with the 5B-32 module?

Solution:
This component is a 20 ohm current resistor for converting the input process current to a voltage. The component is black and plugs directly into the backplane just behind the 5B-32 Module (between the module and the screw terminals). There are two different versions of this current resistor because there are two different manufacturers of the 5B product line: Analog Devices and Dataforth. NI only resells these products.

While the 5B products available from each manufacturer are functionally identical, there is a design difference between the 5B Backplanes that necessitates two different current resistors:

1. The backplane from Analog Devices has a larger space for the current resistor, and the 5B-32 Module from Analog Devices is sized for this space.
2. The backplane from Dataforth has a smaller space for the current resistor, and therefore the 5B-32 Module from Dataforth comes with an equally small current resistor.

If you have a 5B Backplane from Dataforth and a 5B-32 Module from Analog Devices then the current resistor will not fit in the slot. You can tell which current resistor you have by looking at the code printed on it. The current resistor from Analog Devices is labeled with the code AC1362, while the current resistor from Dataforth is labeled with the code SCMXR1.
