DAQ Assistant Hangs When Creating Tasks or Global Channels

Problem: If you install VISA before you install NI-DAQmx, the DAQ Assistant might hang when you try to use it. The problems occurs if you do the following:
  1. Install a new software product that supports the Instrument I/O Assistant, such as LabVIEW 7.0 and Measurement Studio 7.0.

  2. Install VISA only (other drivers are fine as long as they are not DAQ).

  3. Run the Instrument I/O Assistant.

  4. Install NI-DAQmx.

  5. Run the DAQ Assistant.

  6. Create a task or global channel.
The DAQ Assistant hangs.

Note:  If you install VISA (which installs support for the Instrument I/O Assistant), and NI-DAQmx (which installs the DAQ Assistant) at the same time, you will not see this error.

This issue is most likely to be seen if you installed the August 2003 version of the Evaluation Driver CD. The Evaluation Driver CD is a special, smaller version of the full Driver CD (which spanned 2 CDs in the August version) that is included with the localized versions of National Instruments Evaluation software packages. These packages include:
  • LabVIEW 7.0 Evaluation - German

  • LabVIEW 7.0 Evaluation - French

  • LabVIEW 7.0 Evaluation - Japanese

  • LabVIEW 7.0 Evaluation - Korean

  • Measurement Studio Evaluation

  • LabWindows/CVI Evaluation
These releases are most likely to experience the problem, because NI-DAQmx is turned off by default on the Evaluation Driver CD.


Solution: If you are experiencing the problem above, delete the mxMax.mxc file from the data directory.

Also, as noted above, you can avoid the issue entirely by installing VISA and DAQ at the same time.
