What Type of Signal Is The 10 Mhz Clock On The VXI Backplane?

Hardware: VXI/VME/MXI>>MXI Interfaces>>VXI-MXI-2

Problem: I want to understand what types of signals are used for the 10 Mhz VXI clock on the backplane and across MXI-2. What type of signal is it?

Solution: There are three scenarios to consider - the type of signal at the front panel SMB connector, the signal type on the VXI backplane, and the signal type across the MXI bus:

  • The input and output levels at the CLK10 SMB connector are standard TTL signals.
  • On the VXI backplane itself, the CLK10 input/output levels are ECL signals.
  • Across MXI-2, the CLK10 signal is routed at ECL levels.

Therefore, although the actual signal is an ECL signal, you should use a TTL signal for external clocking through the SMB connector.
