GPIB Plug and Play Board Undetected by Windows NT
Hardware: GPIB>>Plug-in Controllers>>PCI-GPIB
Problem: I have a GPIB Plug and Play board, but it is not being detected in Windows NT. What can I do?
Solution: If you have plugged in your board before installing the NI-488.2 driver, then your board will not be properly registered by Windows NT. Since the NI-488.2 driver acts as the interface between your GPIB board and the operating system (and any GPIB programs), Windows NT will not be able to associate the board with its corresponding driver, unless that driver is already present on the system.
This may also be the problem if you did not see the New Hardware Found message when you installed your board, or you are getting an
EDVR error when you try to access your GPIB interface.
To fix the problem, complete the following steps:
- Set the Board Type to None in the GPIB Configuration Utility.

- Shut down your system.
- Remove the board from your computer.
- Reboot your system once with the board removed.
- Shut down your system again.
- Install the board, preferably in a different slot.
- Reboot your system.
- If you do not see a New Hardware Found message and the board's serial number does not show up in the GPIB Configuration Utility, then repeat the preceding steps again.

Other Troubleshooting Tips
- If you have a board that has jumpers and dip switches, like this:

then you do NOT have a plug and play board. See KnowledgeBase 2Y4CCJK8: Troubleshooting Hardware Installation Problems.
- Otherwise, if your board is still not detected:
ISA Boards:
- Make sure that the ISAPNP drivers are installed.
- You may need to edit your Windows NT Registry to remove any incorrect information about the board that may be in there.
- Use the Request Support page to contact National Instruments for assistance.
PCMCIA Cards:
Make sure that the 32-bit PCMCIA drivers are enabled. Under Start»Settings»Control Panel»System, select the Performance tab and look at the PC Cards (PCMCIA) line. If it reads 32-bit, then the 32-bit PCMCIA drivers are enabled.
- Enabled: If the 32-bit PCMCIA drivers are enabled, then repeat steps 1-7 again.
- Disabled: If the 32-bit PCMCIA drivers are not enabled, enable them by running the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard, a Control Panel applet found under Start»Settings»Control Panel»PC (PCMCIA). After enabling 32-bit PCMCIA drivers, you need to shut down your computer and restart it. When your computer restarts, your PCMCIA-GPIB should be detected, assuming it has been inserted, and a New Hardware Found message should appear.
If no New Hardware Found message appears, then use our Request Support page to contact National Instruments for assistance.
