What is the Difference Between a Short and Long PCI Board?

Hardware: Multifunction DAQ (MIO), GPIB

Problem: I need to know if a PCI board will fit in my computer, and all my computer manual says is that it will accommodate Short or Long PCI boards. How do I know if a National Instruments board is Short or Long?

Solution: PCI Boards usually conform to two basic form factors, Short and Long.
  • A Short PCI board has a length of 174.63 mm or 17.5 cm. Most National Instruments boards fall into this category.
  • A Long PCI board is 312 mm or 31.2 cm in length. Only a few NI boards fall into this category, such as the PCI-61xx S-series boards.
There are also Low Profile (LP) boards available, such as PCI-GPIB/LP. These boards are even shorter than the standard Short PCI board, with lengths between 121.79 mm and 169.52 mm.
