What is SAMwrap and why is it preventing me from launching my National Instruments software?

Primary Software: TestStand
Primary Software Version: 3.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Professional Development System

Problem:
When I try to start my National Instruments software (such as LabVIEW or TestStand), I receive an error from SAMwrap, informing me that I am unable to connect to the license server and cannot start my application.

I am not using a volume license agreement, why is this happening?

Solution:
SAMwrap is not a National Instruments product. It is a product of Macrovision Corporation's SAMsolutions. SAMsolutions is a suite of Software Asset Management (SAM) tools that includes SAMwrap, SAMreport and SAMsuite.

SAMwrap is built as a license management tool to ensure that licenses are used as described in the license agreement. In order to do this for all applications SAMwrap will follow a two step process:
  1. Rename the executable (EXE) of the program you wish to call with a .FRW extension. For example, SAMwrap would rename LabVIEW.EXE to LabVIEW.FWR.
  2. SAMwrap then creates a smaller version of the EXE that was originally renamed. This new EXE will connect to the license server to verify that the software can be used. The new EXE that is created will be significantly smaller than the original EXE as it simply performs license verification and calls the FRW file or notifies the user of an error.
In order to fix this problem, there are three solutions:
  1. Ensure you are connected to the server and have permissions to run the software.
  2. Disable SAMwrap on your system.
  3. Rename (or delete) the new EXE file. Then rename the .FRW file back to the original EXE name. For instance, you could rename the new LabVIEW.EXE to SAMwrapLabVIEW.EXE. Then you could rename LabVIEW.FRW back to LabVIEW.EXE. This should allow you to run your National Instruments software outside of SAMwrap.
