How do I Transfer Tasks, Virtual Channels, and Custom Scales to Another Computer?

Hardware: Legacy DAQ Devices, Modular Instruments, Multifunction DAQ (MIO), PXI/CompactPCI, SCC, SCXI

Problem:

I have created several tasks, virtual channels, and custom scales that are specific to a LabVIEW program that I would like to move to another computer. How can I easily transfer these things to the new computer?

Solution:

There are two ways to transfer tasks, virtual channels, and custom scales from one computer to another. You can either export these through Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) or utilize the features of a project (.lvproj) in LabVIEW 8.0 and later.

Measurement and Automation Explorer:

  1. Select File » Export from the pull-down menu.
  2. Select the system from which you’d like to export your configuration using the pull-down menu.
  3. Select the location to store you configuration file in the "To file" pull-down menu.
  4. Select the file type of your configuration file from the pull-down menu.
  5. Click the Next button.
  6. Select My System » Data Neighborhood » NI-DAQmx » The tasks that you would like to transfer to the new computer from the Configuration tree in MAX.
  7. Select My System » Data Neighborhood » NI-DAQmx Global Virtual Channels » The global virtual channels that you would like to transfer to the new computer from the Configuration tree in MAX.
  8. Then click Export.
  9. When this has been completed, click Finished.
  10. Take the file located in the location specified in step 2 and transfer it to the new computer.
  11. Import that file into Measurement and Automation Explorer by selecting File » Import.
  12. Select the location of the file from the pull-down menu.
  13. Select a system to import the configuration file to from the pull-down menu.
  14. Click the Next button.
  15. Select the tasks, channels, and scales to import.
  16. Click the Import button.
  17. Click the Finish button. This will import all the selected tasks, channels, and scales to the new computer.

LabVIEW 8.0 or later

  1. Create all of your tasks, virtual channels, and custom scales in your project.
    1. Expand your project in the Project Explorer.
    2. Right click on My Computer.
    3. Select New.
    4. Select whether you want to create a new NI-DAQmx Task, NI-DAQmx channel, or NI-DAQmx Scale.
    5. Use the dialog box that pops up to configure the task, channel, or scale.
    6. Repeat steps d and e until all necessary tasks, channels, and scales have been created.
  2. Create a zip file for the project.
    1. Right click on Build Specifications.
    2. Select New » Zip File.
    3. Enter a path for the Zip File.
    4. Click Build.
    5. Go to the file location and transfer that file to the new computer.
  3. Opening the project on the new computer will allow you to access all the VIs in the project as well as all the tasks, channels, and scales.
