Problem: What are the effects of the PID Lead-Lag VI on a closed-loop control system?
Solution: The PID Lead-Lag VI is an approximation of a true exponential lead-lag function, and the output is calculated by

where Tlead is the lead time and Tlag is the lag time in minutes. A lead-lag compensator combines the effects of a lead compensator with those of a lag compensator. The result is a system with improved transient response, stability, and steady-state error. In general, the lead portion of the controller is used to achieve a shorter rise time and higher bandwidth, and the lag portion is brought in to improve the relative stability of the closed loop system.
