Changing a Single-Seat Installation to a NI Volume License Manager Version 2.0 Managed Seat

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 2.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Other NI Software>>NI License Manager

Problem:
How Can I Change a Single-Seat Software Installation to a Seat Managed by NI Volume License Manager Version 2.0?

Solution:
For NI Volume License Manager 2.1, please see link below.

All end-users of software managed by NI Volume License Manager must point to a server which hosts NI Volume License Manager rather than looking locally for a license file. In order for the software to know where to look for NI Volume License Manager, the software must be prepared for network installation. Preparing your software for network installation adds installer steps to automatically point client computers to the NI Volume License Manager server.

There are two methods usually used to point client software to NI Volume License Manger. Users may either uninstall the software on the client machine and then install the software that was created for network installation, or users can leave the software installed and simply run the program mslsetup.exe. This file is created when a network installer is created. Listed below are the three steps to create and distribute mslsetup.exe.

  1. Create a network installer with one of your NI software products using NI Volume License Manager
  2. In the created network installer folder, there will be multiple files whose names begin with "msl". All the files with "msl" in the filename and an additional file named "xerces-c_2_3_0.dll" are necessary to run mslsetup.exe. Copy these files to a disk or to a network location.
  3. mslsetup.exe needs to be run on the client machine. This will change the client software so that it points to the license server.
If a computer is disconnected from the network, users can create a disconnected license file on the server machine that can be loaded onto the disconnected computer. See the link below for more information. If the user wants to rely solely on the disconnected license for this computer, any single-seat licenses can be removed by deleting the license files in the C:\Program Files\NI\Shared\License Manager\Licenses directory.
