Where Can I Find Some Common Windows 3.1 PCMCIA Terminology?

Problem: Where can I find some common Windows 3.1 PCMCIA terminology?
Solution: Some common terminology is listed below:
PCMCIA
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. This association creates the PCMCIA standards.
PC Card
Name given to a card which uses the PCMCIA standards. The PCMCIA GPIB is a PC Card. According to the association, it is actually incorrect to say PCMCIA card.
CIS
Card Information Structure. This is a part of the PC Card which holds its name, a little about its function, and what resources it needs to function. This is stored on internal ROM inside the card itself.
Registered
A PC Card is said to be registered if the information used to identify the card when inserted has been recorded in an initialization file. With some card services (CardWare, for instance), the NI PCMCIA-GPIB will not function properly unless it is registered. This occurs because some card services try to configure the card automatically.
System Resources
System memory ranges, I/O ranges, and IRQ levels. When a card is inserted, CardWare assigns resources to the card from the pool of available resources. If there are certain resources which are required for the system that should not be available to CardWare, they need to be excluded from CardWare use in the [resources] section of cardware.ini.
Client
Program that uses card services directly. PCEnable, PCDisk, and PCCard are all PCMCIA clients. When the NI-488.2 driver is active it is also considered a client.
Type II
Type II is the standard credit card size slot.
Type III
Type III is a card slot with more height. A type III slot is really nothing more than two type II slots stacked on top of each other.
CardBus
CardBus is a PCMCIA specification.
Hot Swapping
The act of inserting and removing cards into a machine that is powered on. If the card services are configured properly, hot swapping is supported with the NI PCMCIA-GPIB. Note: You should never hot swap any card when that card is currently in use, as this will probably cause a system lock up.
