How Can I Reset the IP Address of my Real-Time Controller Using a Crossover Cable?

Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers>>PXI-8196 RT

Problem:
I need to reset the IP address of my Real-Time (RT) controller but i don't have a network connection to change the settings. Can I change the IP address using a crossover cable and if so, how?

Solution:
You can change the IP address by following the steps below

  • Power down chassis you are using for the RT controller
  • Remove the Real Time controller from the chassis
  • Look at the manual for your controller to see the dip switch configuration and turn the IP reset switch ON
  • Place the controller in the chassis and power it up
  • Open Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and the controller should appear under Remote Systems with an IP address of 0.0.0.0 in the Network Settings tab on the right-hand side
  • Set the controller to a static IP, the ranges for which are explained in KnowledgeBase 2FF6N4KN: Choosing a Static IP for for Your Real-Time Engine. Assign it a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
  • Power down the chassis and change the IP reset switch to OFF
  • Set the PC to a static IP by going to Control panel»Network connections, right click on Local Area Connection and click on Properties
  • Under the General tab, choose Internet protocol(TCP/IP), and click on Properties
  • Place a static IP that conforms to the range given in the knowledgebase entry linked above and a Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
  • Connect PC to your chassis using a crossover cable*
  • Power up chassis and click on the reset button (controller front)
  • Ping the IP address of the controller in the command line to ensure proper connection
  • Open Measurement and Automation Explorer and the controller should appear under Remote Systems with the static IP that you chose showing up on the right side
*Note: Make sure a crossover cable is used and NOT a normal Ethernet cable
