Installing NI Switch Executive 2.1.1 for LabVIEW 8.5 or Later

Problem:
I upgraded my LabVIEW to version 8.5 or later, and then I installed NI Switch Executive 2.1.1. I’m not able to see any Switch Executive VIs in LabVIEW. Also, when I installed Switch Executive, there was no option to install LabVIEW 8.5 or later support. How do I install the support for Switch Executive in LabVIEW 8.5 or newer versions?

Solution:
NI Switch Executive 2.1.1 doesn't install support for LabVIEW 8.5 or newer. If you want to use NI Switch Executive 2.1.1 or previous with LabVIEW 8.5 or newer, install support for LabVIEW 7.0, 7.1, 8.0, or 8.2 and manually copy the appropriate files to the LabVIEW 8.5 or later directory.

Here is the procedure to copy the needed files in order for NI Switch Executive 2.1.1 to work in LabVIEW 8.5; for later versions of LabVIEW just change the version number in the filepaths (i.e. from 8.5 to 8.6):

  1. If you have not yet installed NI Switch Executive, then run the installer and choose to install support for LabVIEW 8.2 from the feature tree.

    Note:     If LabVIEW versions 7.0 and/or 7.1 are on the system but LabVIEW 8.0 or 8.2 is not, the Switch Executive installer will still allow the installation of support for version 8.0 or 8.2. It will do this by creating a directory structure for LabVIEW 8.0 or 8.2 within the National Instruments directory, containing only the files necessary for Switch Executive support. If you prefer for the directory structure creation to not take place and still install support for LabVIEW version 7.0 and/or 7.1, all of the following steps are valid for versions 7.0 and 7.1 except Step 8.

    The _niSE menu folder and nise.mnu file referenced in Step 8 are not available in LabVIEW versions 7.0 and 7.1. This folder and file provide access to the Switch Executive functions from the Functions Palette in LabVIEW. Please download the attached ZIP file containing the necessary folder and file and extract to the directory referenced in Step 9 if you do not install support for LabVIEW 8.0 or 8.2.

  2. Copy the SwitchExecutive folder found in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.2\vi.lib
  3. Paste the folder in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.5\vi.lib
  4. Copy the SwitchExecutive example folder found in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.2\examples\
  5. Paste the folder in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.5\examples\
  6. Copy the Switch Executive help files found in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.2\help
    • nise.chm
    • nise.txt
  7. Paste the files in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.5\help
  8. Copy the _niSE menu folder and nise.mnu file found in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.2\menus\Categories\Measurement
  9. Paste the folder and file in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.5\menus\Categories\Measurement
  10. Launch or restart LabVIEW 8.5 and VIs, examples, and help should work properly.
  11. To ensure that the links to the Switch Executive examples show up in the Example Finder when launched from LabVIEW 8.5, browse to C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\Example Finder\1.0\Products\LabVIEW\8.2\exbins\English\Platform and copy lvswexec.bin3 from this folder and paste it into C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\Example Finder\1.0\Products\LabVIEW\8.5\exbins\English\Platform

NI Switch Executive 3.0 and later will include support for LabVIEW version 8.5 and newer; the above procedure will no longer be needed.
