Using National Instruments Serial Hardware with PCI-x or PCI Universal Slot

Hardware: Serial

Problem:
I want to take advantage of the speed of the PCI-x or PCI Universal bus with my serial hardware. How can I tell if my hardware will work or not? If my hardware won't work with PCI-x or PCI Universal, what are my options?

Solution:
PCI-x or PCI Universal has several improvements over the standard PCI technology, including twice as fast data transfers and being able to function at 3.3V.

The following are a couple of the ways you can check as to whether or not your hardware is PCI-x or PCI Universal:
  • If you have any of National Instruments 843x series interfaces, then you have a PCI-x or PCI Universal Device. PCI-485/x and PCI-232/x cards are not PCI-X or PCI Universal compliant. For more information see the NI Serial hardware Specification document linked below:

  • If you are not sure what kind of serial interface you have, check the hardware. If your NI-Serial device has two notches in it's PCI connector, it is PCI-x or PCI Universal Compliant.

PCI-485/2 Interface Card - Only one notch in PCI connector
PCI-8431/2 (485) Interface Card - Two notches in PCI connector
