MATRIXx Installation Methods
Primary Software: MATRIXx
Primary Software Version: 7.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: What do the various methods of installing MATRIXx mean? I can choose from server, client or standard installation. Which one should I choose?
Solution: When installing MATRIXx there are three options in Windows.
- Server - Only works on Windows NT. Installer does a full-install of MATRIXx and then shares the folder.
- Client - Does not install MATRIXx, instead it creates a short-cut to the files on the computer where a server install has been done.
- Standard - Installs MATRIXx locally and optionally the FlexLM license server.
NOTE: The Server/Client part here does not refer to the license server. When a client installation loads, it loads the files across the network from the shared folder on the server. This will use up more network bandwidth and loading MATRIXx may take longer, but means that the installation can be managed from one location.
Standard installation is recommended in most situations. It does not require a Windows NT computer, allows MATRIXx to load faster and uses less network bandwidth.
- Node-locked: Follow the standard installation, at the end the license server will be installed and you will be prompted to create a license file.
- Floating License Server: Either complete the installation as for a node-locked installation. This will install a copy of MATRIXx that can be run on the same node. Alternatively if you are not going to run MATRIXx on the license server node you can choose to only run the license server installer from the NILM directory of the installation CD.
- Floating License Client: Complete the installation as for a node-locked license, when prompted about generating a new license.dat file choose no. After the installation completes you can then copy the license.dat file from the server, or create a proxy file as described in the MATRIXx System Administrators Guide.
The difference between a license server comes at the end of the installation when it asks about the keycodes. For a server or stand-alone installation you would use the keycodes. For a client installation you would say that you already have a license file and use the license file from the license server.
