Device Not Found When Emulating a 78xx R-Series Board with LabVIEW FPGA 7.1

Problem:
I am creating a LabVIEW FPGA 7.1 program that will eventually use the PCI-7831R board.  However, I do not have that board installed on my computer and I am trying to emulate this device.  When I try to switch execution targets to an emulated R Series board, it does not list any supported emulation devices, even though it is states that you can emulate a device in the help file.  How do I overcome this and emulate my R-Series board in LabVIEW FPGA 7.1?

Solution:
In LabVIEW 7.1 with LabVIEW FPGA 1.1, you must have an FPGA device installed to use an emulator.  Once the FPGA device is installed, you will then be able to emulate this device for future use.

Complete the following steps to use an emulator to test an FPGA VI.

  1. Be sure the VI you want to run is marked top level in the Embedded Project Manager window.
  2. Select Operate » Switch Execution Target on the front panel or block diagram or Target » Switch Execution Target in the Embedded Project Manager window.
  3. Select the emulator that matches the FPGA device. For example, if the device appears as FPGA Device (PXI-7831R), select FPGA Emulator (PXI-7831R).
  4. Click the Run button. LabVIEW downloads a precompiled emulation VI to the FPGA device to provide I/O, and the FPGA VI runs on the host computer.
In LabVIEW 8.0 and above, you can emulate FPGA devices without having to physically have the boards installed on the computer prior to the emulation.
