Organizing and Announcing Software for Use With NI Volume License Manager (VLM)
Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 1.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: I am the administrator for NI Volume License Manager (VLM) and I received software that I need to distribute to my end users. I plan to post the software on a network drive for everyone to install. What is the recommended way to organize the software?
Solution: When posting National Instruments software on a network for users to install, first ensure that the software was created for network install. See the NI VLM help for information about creating Volume License Installers. Also, make sure that you have the latest version of NI VLM. To get the latest version, see

Create a folder on a network location that will be accessible by most of the end-users. Name this folder “National Instruments Software”. Then place the Volume License Installers created inside of that directory. Here is an example of what the directory structure may look like under the National Instruments Software folder once the directories created by the Volume License Installer wizard have been placed:
- LabVIEW 8.2.1
- _SourceFiles
- 4th Floor Engineering
- Manufacturing Floor
- Test Lab 3
- TestStand 4.0
- _SourceFiles
- 4th Floor Engineering
- Manufacturing Floor
- Test Engineering
- LabWindows/CVI 8.1
- _SourceFiles
- 4th Floor Engineering
- Test Lab 1
- Test Engineering
- DIAdem 10.2
- Test Lab 2
- Test Engineering
- Manufacturing Floor
- Device Driver CDs
- _SourceFiles
- 4th Floor Engineering
- Manufacturing Floor
- Test Lab 1
- Test Lab 2
- Test Lab 3
- Test Engineering
If you have Developer Suite Licenses, you may also want to create a Developer Suite subfolder. If in the above example the "4th Floor Engineering" had permissions for Developer Suite with Automated Test, you may want to add an additional folder as follows:
- Developer Suite with Automated Test
- LabVIEW 8.2.1 (Shortcut to 4th Floor Engineering under LabVIEW 8.2.1)
- TestStand 4.0 (Shortcut to 4th Floor Engineering under TestStand 4.0)
- LabWindows/CVI 8.1 (Shortcut to 4th Floor Engineering under LabWindows/CVI 8.1)
Below is an email template which you can customize to announce the products and give installation instructions:
We have new National Instruments software products available!
See http://www.ni.com for information on these new products and their new features.
To install:
Browse to the following network location: \\\National Instruments Software\
Find the folder corresponding to the product that you want to use (for example, LabVIEW 8.2.1, or DIAdem 10.2). Under that folder find your correct group folder (for example, 4th Floor Engineering). In that folder, run setup.exe to start the installation process.
If you use Developer Suite, you have the right to use all of the products in the Developer Suite folder. Install the products that you’d like to use by running setup.exe found in each of the products' folders.
During installation, if you are prompted to locate the Driver CDs you can find the location here: \\
\National Instruments Software\Device Drivers CD\.
All National Instruments software products use the same Driver CDs.
After installation, a dialog box will appear. Please fill out the information requested. Some information will be required. After filling in the information, a dialog will display the administrator information. Contact the administrator to ensure that you are licensed to use the software.
