How do I assign a footprint to a virtual component in Multisim?

Primary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Multisim
Primary Software Version: 8.2.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Multicap, Electronics Workbench>>Ultiboard

Problem: In Multisim, virtual components do not automatically have a footprint associated with them. This is because virtual components are modeled theoretically rather than as a "real" device that can be purchased. Therefore, the component does not have a natural footprint. There are situations, however, in which a designer is satisfied with using virtual components in the schematic and would like to assign a footprint to it so that it can be transferred to a full PCB design.

Solution: The footprint assigned to the virtual component is only valid for the symbol that is placed upon the schematic. This is not a change that can be saved to a database, and therefore the procedure below must be repeated each time this component requires a footprint:
  1. Turn on the Spreadsheet View by selecting View >> Spreadsheet View
  2. Select the Component tab in the Spreadsheet View
  3. Scroll over to the Footprint column
  4. Left-click on Footprint data of the virtual component (circled in red in the image below)
  5. In the Edit Footprint dialog box click the Select From Database button
  6. Pick the appropriate footprint for the virtual component
  7. Click the Select button
  8. Click the OK button

The footprint is now associated with this virtual component.

Please Note:The Spreadsheet View is not available in all versions/tiers of Multisim/Multicap. In the situation that you do not have this feature you must create a new component 'for layout only' to completely replace the component in the schematic.
