Problem: A USB device is either freezing when plugged in or is not recognized by the computer at all. How do I fix this? Solution: Try using the USB port on the back of the computer. USB ports on the front of desktop computers are designed for convenience when plugging in small devices such as a flash drive or a small camera. Typically, front USB ports are not designed for use with higher bandwidth devices such as external hard drives, MP3 players, and data acquisition devices. Before any further troubling when dealing with this kind of strange behavior, ensure that the USB device is plugged into a rear USB port (on the back of the computer). Most front USB ports do not supply the bandwidth and/or do not allow the power (dynamically granted up to 500mA) necessary to support many devices. With many USB issues, this is a top priority and will solve many issues. To circumvent the lack of convenience, a USB extension cable may be used.
