User Level Access to FieldPoint Explorer in Windows 2000 Results in an Unrecoverable ErrorPrimary Software: Driver Software>>FieldPoint ExplorerPrimary Software Version: 3.0.2 Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: When I log onto Windows 2000 with User level access and try to open FieldPoint Explorer, I get an error: "Unable to access the Windows System Registry." Everything works fine when I log on as an Administrator. What am I doing wrong? Solution: If your computer is running Windows 2000, you will not be able to run the FieldPoint Explorer with just User level access. In order to run FieldPoint Explorer, you need to have at least Power User level access. This holds true for Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) as well for FieldPoint 4.0 and later. This change is due to a difference in the way permissions are implemented by Microsoft in Windows 2000 as compared to Windows NT.
Because FieldPoint Explorer accesses the registry, it will not be executable for a User on a Windows 2000 machine. This means that you cannot configure FieldPoint Explorer or MAX as a User. However, after the modules have been configured by a Power User or Administrator, anyone can use the FieldPoint modules through a program that accesses FieldPoint via the .iak file, such as LabVIEW or LabWindows/CVI. The alternative is to grant "Full Control" to "Everyone" under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\National Instruments\FieldPoint in the Windows registry. Refer to the Related Links section for more information on how to do this. Note: Measurement and Automation Explorer will generate a similar error under the same situation: "NIMax.exe Generated errors and will be closed by Windows."
