Using the MID-765x Drive with Low Inductance Motors

Hardware: Motion Control>>Power Drives>>MID-7652, Motion Control>>Power Drives>>MID-7654

Problem:
I have a motor with an inductance of less than 110 μH (microhenries). I would like to connect it to a MID-765x Drive. Is this possible?

Solution:
The MID-765x Drive has two settings for motor inductance. Greater than 440 μH (Standard) and between 110 and 440 μH (Low).

Use DIP switch 9 on each of the 9-position DIP switch banks to set the motor inductance level for each axis. For a Standard range of inductance, set DIP switch 9 to “On”. For a Low range of inductance, set DIP switch 9 to “Off”.

A motor with an inductance less than 110 μH (microhenries) can not be directly wired to the MID-765x. However, adding external inductors to your motor will increase the overall inductance and allow you to use the motor with the MID-765x.

It is common practice to add external inductors to your motor leads to reduce ripple current and increase the effective inductance (lower ripple current will also reduce the amount of heat generated by the motor coils). Higher inductance values will provide lower ripple but a slower motor response time. (This procedure will add a negligible amount of resistance to the "motor winding resistance" value.)

The inductors L1 and L2 should be balanced (that is, L1 = L2). By adding these inductors to the motor power leads, you increase the effective inductance of the motor and reduce the power generated due to ripple current.

To calculate the total inductance of the system (L_total), add all of the inductances together, including the motor inductance (L_motor), as shown in the following formula.

L_total = L1 + L2 + L_motor

By selecting the appropriate inductors, you will be able to use your very low inductance motor with the MID-765x.
