Archived: Why Do I Lose Communication with My FP-2000 or FP-2010 Since Installing LabVIEW 8.0?

This document has been archived and is no longer updated by National Instruments

Hardware: FieldPoint>>Controllers/Network Modules>>FP-2000

I recently upgraded to LabVIEW 8.0 and now I keep losing the connection to my [c]FP-2000 or [c]FP-2010 sometimes with an error message Unable to Connect Data Item in Module

After installing LabVIEW 8.0 and FieldPoint 5.0, the software on the device must be updated. When updating the software, if the shared variable engine is installed you will start to experience connectivity problems. This is because the [c]FP-2000 only has 16 MB of memory which is insufficient to run the shared variable engine. This issue has also been seen with FP-2010.

To uninstall the shared variable engine, please perform the following:
    1. Open Measurement and Automation Explorer, expand the remote system section.
    2. Expand the tree under your [c]FP-20xx, right-click on Software and select Add/Remove Software.
    3. In the window that appears, select the Network Variable Engine.
    4. Select Uninstall this Feature.
    5. Click Next.
If your system does not respond while opening the Add/Remove Software window, you will need to erase all contents of the C: drive. Make sure to back up any files you require from your controller first.
    1. Set the controller’s safe mode dip switch to on (usually dip switch 7).
    2. Reset the controller.
    3. FTP onto the controller.
    4. Select and delete all files.
    5. Set the controller’s safe mode dip switch to off.
    6. Reset the controller.
After all files have been erased, you must reload the controller’s software. This can be done through Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) by right clicking on your target and selecting Add/Remove Software. If you do not see your controller in MAX please see the user manual for installation help. When you select Add/Remove Software in MAX, it will populate a list of all the software you can install. Select all the software you require.
