How to Determine the Thermocouple Type and the Correct Polarity of Signal Connections Hardware: SCC
Problem: I have a thermocouple and I do not know how to determine what kind it is, nor how to connect it properly in order to obtain correct readings from it. How can I determine the thermocouple characteristics? Solution: Standard thermocouple types and properties can be identified by the colors of the insulation and jacketing. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has established a set of specifications of thermocouples types to make identification and use of thermocouples easy. The table listed below indicates the standard color codes that you can use to identify the type of your thermocouple, and signal polarity for each type of thermocouple. If you encounter a thermocouple that is not listed in the table, it probably does not comply to the ANSI standard. You should contact the vendor for more detailed information about its operation, scaling, and connectivity. Standards may also vary by country.
