How Do I Update the Firmware on My NI 9882 DeviceNet C Series Module?

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet
Primary Software Version: 2.2
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: Industrial Communications>>DeviceNet

With the release of NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet 14.5, the firmware for the NI 9882 has been updated.  How do I update the firmware to use with my version of the NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet driver?

With the newer versions of NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet, the firmware on the NI 9882 has been updated.  If you are using an older version of the DeviceNet driver and a NI 9882 manufacturer after April 1st, 2015 (you can find the date of the module near the serial number on the back of the module), then you will need to downgrade your firmware.   There are two separate tools available to perform this task depending on which driver version you have.

You can find the tool for NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet 2.3 installed with the driver.  The tool is located at <Program Files>\National Instruments\NI-IndCom for DeviceNet\Utilities\ModuleFirmwareUpgrade.exe.  For NI-Industrial Communication for DeviceNet 2.2 or earlier, please download the from the attachment section.  Follow the steps below for both tools:
  1. Power on and discover your cRIO chassis.
  2. Insert the NI 9882 into Slot 2 of your chassis
  3. Create a blank project in LabVIEW
  4. Discover your chassis in LabVIEW and select FPGA Interface Programming Mode
  5. Right-click on your chassis in LabVIEW and select Deploy
  6. Run the ModuleFirmwareUpgrade.exe tool or ModuleFirmwareUpdate.exe tool (Depending on the version of NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet driver you are using)
  7. Select your remote device from the RIO Device drop-down menu.  If you cannot find you are device, choose browse
  8. Select your chassis in the Chassis drop-down menu.
  9. Click Connect, after a connection is completed the Update button will be enabled.
  10. Click Update
  11. In the dialog menu, click Yes.
  12. The Success boolean will illuminate after the firmware has been successfully updated.
