Default Settings for Serial Ports

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA
Primary Software Version: 3.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Utility Software>>NI Example Finder

Problem:
If I call a VISA Open or viOpen on a serial port, what are the default settings? Are they loaded from Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) or the Operating System (OS)?

Solution:
You can load the port settings from either MAX or the OS. One of the parameters of VISA Open (in LabVIEW) and viOpen (in text-based languages) is a parameter called access mode. If you set access mode to 4, then the port settings will load from in MAX in Windows or from visaconf in Linux.  If you set access mode to 0, then the port settings will load from the Device Manager in Windows or load the default serial settings for Linux.

The default serial port settings are:
  • Baud Rate: 9600
  • Data Bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop Bits: 1
  • Flow Control: None

Note: The default setting in LabVIEW for the access mode is 0.
