Multiple NILM Processes after Installing LabVIEW and the NI License Manager

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>LabVIEW Full Development System
Primary Software Version: 6.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: After I install LabVIEW 6.1 and the NI License Manager, I notice that I have one process running called lmgrd and several processes running called nilm. Why are there so many nilm processes?

Solution: Your computer should have only one lmgrd process and one nilm process running, which together represent the NI License Server. Multiple nilm processes are caused by the fact that the lmgrd process requires TCP/IP to communicate with the nilm process, and TCP/IP is incorrectly configured for the two processes to properly communicate with each other.

Note: These processes communicate exclusively with each other and no other processes or Internet resources.

To resolve this issue, try one of the following solutions. If you have McAfee firewall software installed on your computer, refer to the last paragraph for important information related to that product.
  • Shut down the NI License Manager.

    1. Stop the lmgrd process by navigating to the License Manager directory where your National Instruments software products are installed, usually in the C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\bin directory.

    2. Run nilmUtil.exe and select Options»Stop License Server.

    3. If the lmgrd process is still running in the background, press the <Ctrl-Alt-Delete> keys to open the Task Manager and end the task. If you are on Windows NT and you cannot end the task, launch the Windows NT Services and stop the nilm License Manager service.

  • Remove your network device, such as a network card or an IrDA device, and reinstall it.

    1. Open the Device Manager and select Network Adapters.

    2. Remove the device from the Device Manager and restart your computer. This causes Windows to re-detect the device. When this happens, allow Windows to install the driver. The server should run normally with one lmgrd process and one nilm process.

For LabVIEW 7.0, unless you manually configure the NI License Server to launch on startup, this should not occur. By default the license server is not turned on upon startup.

If you are using McAfee firewall software, the previous solutions do not work. In this case, you must uninstall the McAfee firewall software -- disabling it is not sufficient -- or prevent the NI License Manager from launching on startup as described in the Knowledge Base document linked below.

Note: If you disable the NI License Manager, remote front panel server functionality is not available.
