Installing GPIB Driver Software in Windows NT

Hardware: GPIB

Problem:
How do I install my GPIB driver software on Windows NT?

Solution:
First determine Available Hardware Resources on Windows NT. The hardware resources that you will need to check are base I/O address, interrupt levels, and DMA (direct memory access) channels.

Once you have checked the available resources, you need to install the driver software by running setup.exe from disk 1. (If you downloaded the executable, launch the executable and it will install the driver automatically). Make sure that you are logged on as the Windows NT Administrator before installing the driver software!

Once you install the driver software, you will get the following prompt to configure the software settings:

  1. Select Configure.

  2. Once the driver software and GPIB board have been installed, you must configure the GPIB board in software.

  3. Select GPIB from Start » Settings » Control Panel.

  4. Configure the board through software using the GPIB Configuration dialog box.

  5. You use the list box control on the left to select which board you want to configure and the right list box control to configure devices that will be connected to the board.

  6. Select the Board Type to choose the AT-GPIB/TNT.

  7. Select the AT-GPIB/TNT. Select OK and you will return to the main menu.

  8. Select Configure to set the proper resource settings.

  9. Change the Base I/O Address, Interrupt Level, and DMA Channel settings to reflect the settings on the board itself.

  10. Select Software» if you wish to make additional configuration changes. The majority of the time, you will not have to make any changes.

  11. When you have finished making the appropriate changes, select all of the OK buttons until you exit the GPIB Control Panel. You will then see the following popup:

Select Yes and the changes that you have made will take effect immediately.

  12. If there is a conflict with hardware resource settings, you may get the following error message:

  13. You can use the NT Event Viewer to determine the source of the resource conflict. To reach the Event Viewer, go to Start » Programs » Administrative Tools » Event Viewer. The Event Viewer will inform you about the type of resource conflict. Any modifications that you make will then have to be verified by running the GPIB diagnostics.
