[c]FP-PWM-520 Generates Incorrect Frequencies

Hardware: Compact FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>cFP-PWM-520, FieldPoint>>Discrete I/O Modules>>FP-PWM-520

Problem: Why does my [c]FP-PWM-520 generate a frequency that is one-third of the expected value?

Solution: National Instruments discovered an issue with FieldPoint and Compact FieldPoint [c]FP-PWM-520 modules purchased between August 2005 and July 2007 that may cause the modules to generate a frequency that is one-third of the expected value. The affected modules are all revision C. The revision is identified by the letter in the part number. For example, a revision C cFP-PWM-520 module has part number 185715C-02.

If you want to check if your [c]FP-PWM-520 is affected, do the following:
  1. Using Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), output a signal with a known period and non-zero duty cycle.
  2. Using a scope, measure the generated frequency and ensure that the frequency is equal to 1/period.
Revision C modules that do not exhibit this behavior during testing may still be affected by this issue and could behave this way at a later time. Therefore, National Instruments recommends that you return revision C modules to be updated.

You do not need to verify the error before returning your modules to National Instruments.

National Instruments has redesigned the [c]FP-PWM-520 module to be more robust against part variations that can cause this issue.

If you want to have your modules updated, please call National Instruments at 1-877-493-2408 to obtain a service request number and to arrange shipping. National Instruments will repair the affected products at no cost to you.
