Can I Bind an OPC Item to a Shared Variable in LabVIEW?

Problem:
I want to bind an OPC item to a shared variable in LabVIEW. How do I do this?

Solution:
There are two ways that LabVIEW can connect to OPC servers as a client: The LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module or LabVIEW DataSockets.  Of these, only the DSC module lets you bind a shared variable directly to an OPC item. 

The DSC module allows you to configure an OPC client IO server which exposes OPC items directly to shared variables for binding.  The module also enhances the shared variable to be configured to provide automatic logging, alarming, and security among other things.
