E-Series Common Mode Voltage Limitations

Hardware: Multifunction DAQ (MIO), SCXI, SCC, FieldPoint, Compact FieldPoint, Signal Conditioning Other

Problem:
I am performing an analog acquisition using a National Instruments data acquisition board and it says that I can input up to 10 V differentially.  Does this mean that I can connect 100 V on one lead and 110 V on another lead?

Solution:
No. While the differential input should be no more than 10V, the common mode voltage the common mode voltage must also be kept within an acceptable range. Common mode voltage is the voltage between the positive lead and the negative lead, voltage that is common to both leads.  For the E-Series DAQ devices, the maximum is 11V.
