How Do I Remove References to National Instruments ISA Plug and Play Cards?

Hardware: Legacy DAQ Devices

Problem:
I need to uninstall my ISA Plug and Play board. How do I completely remove all references to this board from my computer?

Solution:
DISCLAIMER: Inappropriate changes to the Windows Registry can disable the operating system! To safeguard against such an accident, we recommend that you back up your existing registry by choosing Registry » Export Registry File... after launching the registry editor and before making any changes.

The following directions help you edit your Registry in Windows NT to remove references to National Instrument ISA Plug and Play cards.

  1. Log onto Windows NT 4.0 with administrator privileges.

  2. Go to the Start menu and Select Run. A dialog box will appear. Enter regedt32 into the dialog box and click on the OK button:
  3. Several windows will appear. Click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine window to bring it to the front.

  4. Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE » SYSTEM » CurrentControlSet » Enum » ISAPNP. Your screen should look something like this:
  5. Highlight ISAPNP and click on the Security » Permissions menu option.

  6. In the resulting dialog box, click on the Replace Permission on Existing Subkeys checkbox so that it is checked. Make sure that Everyone is highlighted in the Name selection box, then click on the Type of Access pull-down menu and select Full Control. Click on the OK button and select Yes when you are asked if you want to replace permission on all existing subkeys within ISAPNP.

  7. In ISAPNP, find and delete all subkeys that begin with NIC. (That is, delete the folders whose names begin with NIC.)

  8. Again, highlight the ISAPNP and click on the Security » Permissions menu option.

  9. In the resulting dialog box, click the Replace Permission on Existing Subkeys checkbox. Make sure that Everyone is highlighted in the Name selection box, then click on the Type of Access pull-down menu and select Read. Click the OK button and select Yes when asked if you want to replace permission on all existing subkeys within ISAPNP.

  10. Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE » SYSTEM » CurrentControlSet » Control » Class » {7C797140-F6D8-11cf-9FD6-OOAO24178A17}.

  11. Delete any subkeys under {7C797140-F6D8-11cf-9FD6-OOAO24178A17}.

  12. Close regedt32.

  13. Make sure that NI-DAQ and the ISA Plug and Play driver are installed, but do not yet install the DAQ card. Restart (to load the drivers), shut down, and install your DAQ hardware device.

If the above suggestions don't work, upgrade your computer's BIOS. You can get the latest version of the BIOS by contacting your computer manufacturer.
