Detecting Ethernet Instrument on PXI RT Controllers

Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module
Primary Software Version: 2009
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: Instrument Connectivity Other>>Ethernet>>PXI-8232, Instrument Connectivity Other>>Ethernet>>PXI-8231

Problem:
When using a PXI-8231 or PXI-8232 Ethernet card in a PXI RT system, how do you see the port and instrument in MAX?

Solution:
To detect your ethernet instruments on a Real-Time PXI controller take the following steps:

  1. First, locate the Remote System, and click the Advanced Ethernet Settings button (located in the same window where the IP address appears)

  2. You will see the following window open. The primary connection is the port that connects to your host computer or network. Click the second ethernet device in the list, and ensure that it is in TCP/IP Network mode (the default is disabled).  The IP address should be on a different subnet from the primary ethernet device's subnet.

  3. Note: If your network card does not show up in this window, refer to KnowledgeBase 54HGP3SK: Real-Time PXI System with Multiple Network Cards Do Not Show Up in MAX.

  4. To detect your instrument, you have to add it manually ensure that it gets detected.  Right-Click Devices and Interfaces and select VISA TCP/IP Resource, then click Next and select Auto-detect of LAN Instrument.  If you want to enter the IP address explicitly, Select Manual Entry of LAN Instrument.  Complete the steps to exit the dialog box, and also optionally provide your instrument with a VISA Alias.
  5. You will now see your TCP/IP Resource
