Why do my Network-Published Shared Variables Appear With Question Marks in the Project Explorer Under Dependencies?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Professional Development System
Primary Software Version: 8.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module

Problem:
My network-published shared variables are nested under Dependencies in the Project Explorer with a question mark beside each variable's name.  I can use the network-published shared variables to communicate between my host and my target, so what is going wrong?

Solution:
Nothing is going wrong.  Your network-published shared variables will appear under My Computer»Dependencies when you open a VI nested under My Computer that statically calls network-published shared variables that reside in a library hosted on your RT Target.  For example, if you double-click on the RT Network Communication - Host.vi in the RT Network Communication.lvproj shipping example, you will see the following:

Similarly, your network-published shared variables will appear under RT Target»Dependencies when you open a VI nested under your RT Target that statically calls network-published shared variables that reside in a library hosted on My Computer.  As an extension of our example, if you move the RT Network Communication.lvlib from the RT Target to My Computer in the Project Explorer and then double-click on the RT Network Communication - RT.vi, you will see the following:

Because these shared variable dependencies are automatically populated, they appear when you open the appropriate VI and disappear when you close that VI.  For more information about dependencies, you can read the Viewing Dependencies in a LabVIEW Project section of the LabVIEW Help.  The RT Network Communication.lvproj shipping example included with the LabVIEW Real-Time Module can be found in the labview\examples\Real-Time\RT Network Communication\Network Variables directory.
