Problem:
I am trying to run a National Instruments installer in Parallels running Windows XP on Mac OS X, but I see the following error:

Why does this error occur, and how can I fix it?

Solution:

Some National Instruments installers require the existence of a 'My Documents' and/or a 'My Pictures' folders.  Parallels Desktop by default enables the "Shared Folders" feature which links specific folders in the Windows XP Virtual Machine to the Mac OS X host operating system.  Due to the way Parallels links folders, some National Instruments installers are unable to access the 'My Documents' and 'My Pictures'  folders, which in turn causes the Fatal Error: Required NIPathsDir ... error message.

To resolve the issue, temporarily disable Shared Folders while installing National Instruments software.

To Disable Shared Folders:

  1. Shutdown the Windows XP Virtual Machine.
  2. Click the yellow Parallels icon  in the Windows XP Virtual Machine system tray.
(Note: You can also access this from Start » All Programs » Parallels » Parallels Tools)
  3. Disable Shared Folders in the Configuration Editor by deselecting the Enabled check box on the Shared Folders Options tab.
  4. Click OK to activate changes and hide the Configuration Editor.
  5. Restart the Windows XP Virtual Machine.
  6. Run the National Instruments installer that was returning the errors.
