Can I Use the NI 9505 Module To Read From an Encoder Without a Motor Connected?

Hardware: Motion Control>>Power Drives>>NI 9505

Problem:
I am developing a motion control application using the NI 9505 motion control module and would like to read from an encoder without a motor connected. I am certain that my encoder is working and connected properly but I can’t seem to read from the encoder using shipping examples. I also notice that the light configuration on the device is as shown in the following figure.

Can I read from an encoder without a motor connected to the NI 9505?

Solution:
You can read from an encoder with the NI 9505 without a motor connected using some of the shipping examples. However, in this case, the light configuration shown above suggests that the device does not have the external power required to read from the encoder. The NI 9505 requires an 8-30 VDC supply voltage to power the DC motor. This external power must also be supplied to be able to read from the encoder. The external power must be connected to the VSUP and COM terminals on the screw terminal.

If the device is properly powered and the encoder can still not be read, consult the Operating Instructions and Specifications manual for the NI 9505 to ensure the encoder lines are properly connected.
