Using a Real-Time FieldPoint Controller to Communicate with an 180x Through Serial
Hardware: Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers>>cFP-1804, Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers>>cFP-1808
Problem: I want to use a Real-Time FieldPoint to communicate with a 180x network module through serial. How do I do this?
Solution: Before following the steps below, connect the cFP-180x to your PC using serial and connect your FieldPoint controller (ie: cFP-2xxx) to the network using ethernet (or to the PC using a crossover cable).
- Configure the cFP-180x in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX).
- Save the FieldPoint configuration file (iak file) from MAX.
- Open an empty LabVIEW Project and import the FieldPoint Configuration file.
- Create and run a VI that uses a FieldPoint Read or FieldPoint Write.
- Disconnent the cFP-180x from the PC and connect it to the cFP-2xxx.
- Add the cFP-2xxx to the LabVIEW Project.
- Drag the VI that you created below the cFP-2xxx in the project and run the VI.
If this does not work you can make sure your RT controller can see the 180x. One way to do this is to put a FieldPoint IO Point on the front panel of a VI targetted to the controller. Click on the drop down arrow and select Browse.... Click on Switch to Controller View. Expand your device and you should see your controller as well as a serial FieldPoint. It will look similar to the following figure. The Serial FieldPoint is circled in red.
