LabVIEW Runtime error in MAX when accessing a cRIO-901x with LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5 from MAX 4.2.1 or earlier

Primary Software: Utility Software>>Measurement & Automation Explorer
Primary Software Version: 4.2.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module
Hardware: CompactRIO>>Controllers>>cRIO-9012

Problem:
When attempting to expand the Software tab in MAX on a cRIO-901x I get several error message for my controllers that have LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5 installed. One of these error messages indicates an error starting the LabVIEW Runtime and says to reinstall your product and then contact National Instruments. If I attempt to Install/Uninstall software from the controllers another message dialog box indicates the operation could not be completed and fails with error code 7411. The possible reason(s) is that the installed software is incompatible with this version of MAX. Why do these two error messages occur and how can I fix them?

Solution:
These error message occur because the MAX version being used (4.2.1 or earlier) to communicate with the Real-Time target is incompatible with the VxWorks version that is installed with LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5. To fix this issue you must upgrade your MAX version to version 4.3 (Driver CD August 2007) or later to access/install/remove software for cRIO-901x targets running LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5.

In LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5, cRIO-901x controllers run an updated version of VxWorks that is incompatible to MAX 4.2.1 and earlier. Both error messages occur due to this incompatibility. Unfortunately, the error message when expanding the software tab has incorrect information. However, the second error dialog shown when attempting to install is correct and indicates the correct message indicating you should upgrade to MAX 4.3 or later.

If it is impossible to upgrade MAX, to access/install/remove software for cRIO-901x RT targets, you must boot the controller into safe mode, format the controller, and reinstall software to function properly. Detailed information on formating and reinstalling software on the cRIO can be found in Reformatting the Flash Memory Card on a CompactRIO Controller help document in Measurement & Automation Explorer Help (MAX Help).
