ERROR: Connect Remote Device and Traditional DAQ devices

Primary Software: Utility Software>>Measurement & Automation Explorer
Primary Software Version: 1.0.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module

Problem:
I am trying to setup my real-time target with traditional DAQ devices. In Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). I go to Tools»Traditional DAQ Configuration»Remote DAQ Configuration... and enter in the IP address of my target. Then I get the error

What does this error mean?

Solution:
Remote Device Access (RDA) is a protocol used in Traditional NI-DAQ to transparently establish communication, configure, and acquire data on the remote device over a Local Area Network or the Internet. To do this, your host computer sets up a RDA Server. You can check to see if your RDA server is running on your host by going to Start»Programs»National Instruments»NI-DAQ»Remote Device Access Server. A small window should popup saying "RDA server in operation". If you do not see "RDA server in operation" refer to the Installation and Configuration section of Networking Two PCs for Remote Data Acquistion.

There are three common causes for this error.

  1. The target is not located at the IP address specified, or the connection to the target is weak. Test this by pinging the target. Ping is a really simple utility that ships on Windows, Unix, Linux, and practically any operating system that has TCP/IP on it. Go to a command prompt, type ping x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IP address that you want to ping.

Ping will send some packets (usually 4) to the target and ask it to reply. You will either get 4 messages back from that host or you will get "Request timed out" meaning that the host never replied. If the device times out, check your connections and make sure the device is in a state it can communicate.

  2. The target and the host do not have the same version of traditional DAQ. Make sure that you upgrade either the host or the target to the higher version of the driver.

  3. The target has been booted into safe mode. Remove the safe mode disk boot into normal operation.
