PHARBOOTSYS Error when Booting Real-Time PC from USB Key

Primary Software:
Primary Software Version: 2009 SP1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I created a Desktop PC Utility USB Drive, but when I attempt to boot my desktop PC from the USB key I see one of the following error messages:

LOADING PHARBOOTSYS error or LOADING PHARBOOTSYS not found

Solution:
If you see the error message LOADING PHARBOOTSYS error, then you should check for the following:
  • Make sure your Desktop PC Utility Disk Drive was created correctly.

  • The hard drive file format of your PC is Win32 or Win16 (not required, but recommended).
PCs must be formatted as FAT32 for use with Real-Time (RT).

  • There is a chance that your PC is simply not compatible with LabVIEW Real-Time / LabWindows/CVI Real-Time. If that is the case, you can use Developer Zone Tutorial: Requirements for a Desktop PC as a Real-Time Target to replace the components in the target system that are not compatible with LabVIEW Real-Time.
If you see the message LOADING PHARBOOTSYS not found:
  • Make sure that the USB key is being recognized as a hard drive (HDD) instead of as a floppy drive (FDD) by the Desktop PC. Each motherboard will have its own BIOS menu that will contain an option to emulate a USB key as a hard drive. This option must be selected for the USB key to be recognized as it should for the Real-Time utility options to appear.

    Note:
This option differs between motherboards, so please refer to the manual for your motherboard.
For users using LabVIEW Real-Time 8.6 or higher:

As stated in the LabVIEW Real-Time 8.6 Manual, RT 8.6 no longer includes updated versions of the PXI and Desktop PC Floppy Disk Utilities. If you have older versions of LabVIEW Real-Time installed, then you can still use Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) to create previous versions of the RT floppy disks, which will continue to work with newer versions of the Real-Time Module. However, older versions of the RT floppy disks do not support device drivers added to subsequent versions of the Real-Time Module. If you need to use the latest device drivers, you must use MAX to create an RT 8.6 USB Utility drive.
Suggestion: If the target already has 8.5.1 on the HDD, then just upgrade to 8.6 in MAX by adding/removing software in Remote Systems. There's no need to use a USB or floppy if you are just upgrading.
