My Modular Instrument Soft Front Panel Will Not Launch.

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-FGEN
Primary Software Version: 2.4
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: I am trying to launch the soft front panel for my modular instrument. Specifically I am launching the FGEN soft front panel and I get error code 1003. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the FGEN driver but it still gives me the same error when launching the soft front panel. I can run FGEN example VIs and the board appears to have no problems in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). What could be wrong?

Solution: The problem is that the C:\ Program Files\IVI\bin directory path is not included in the Path environment variable. Without this directory path the operating system will not be able to locate files needed to launch the soft front panel.

Open a command prompt by clicking on the start menu and choosing run. Type cmd in the run window and this will bring up a Windows command prompt. Display the contents of the standard search path by typing ‘PATH’ followed by the enter key. Look for the C:\ Program Files\IVI\bin. If this directory path does exist then the error is caused by a different issue than the one addressed in this knowledge base. If this directory path does not exist then right click on my computer and choose properties. This will bring up the properties window where you will choose the advanced tab and then click the environment variables button. Select the Path variable under the system variables section and choose edit. This will allow you to manually add C:\Program Files\IVI\bin directory. Pay attention to the syntax as each directory path is followed by a semicolon excluding the last entry.

Note that you may see different error messages for other modular instrument soft front panels. However, if the example VIs work and there are no errors in MAX then it is likely that the Path environment variable needs to be edited as described above.
