Guest or Non-Administrator Accounts Cannot Access NI-VISA Functions in Windows XP

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA
Primary Software Version: 4.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Utility Software>>Measurement & Automation Explorer

Problem:
The NI-VISA library (visa32.dll) will fail to load when guests and non-administrators are logged onto Windows XP. Guests and non-administrators do not have read/write access to the registry key that VISA is trying to access.>

Solution:
When attempting to access NI-VISA registry keys that have read/write restrictions from non-administrator or normal-user accounts, LabVIEW will return error code -1073807346 or BFFF000E The given session or object reference is invalid.

To avoid this problem follow the procedure below:

  1. Log onto the computer as the administrator and open the registry editor. Go to Start»Run and type in regedit and click search.

  2. Explicitly grant the guest account write access under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\National Instruments\NI-VISA for Windows 95/NT. Right click on this folder and select Permissions. If Everyone is present, double-click it and modify the permissions to Full Control. If not, click Add, choose Everyone, and give them Full Control.
